Route finding map at public works

Project "Location map application with interactive map display (DefiMaps)" by five 3rd-year students of Vien Dong College consisting of Tran Minh Tan (team leader), Pham Ngoc Thong, Nguyen Hoang Nam, Nguyen Nhat Tien, and Pham Hoang Nha Thy.

DefiMaps won the second prize in the Startup Kite - Startup Kite contest in 2022 organized by the General Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs).

Sharing about thier DefiMaps, Tran Minh Tan (3rd-year student of the Information Technology Faculty of Vien Dong College) said that this application is similar to Google Maps; however the app core function is to locate users in public places.

For example, by going to Cho Ray hospital and opening the DefiMaps application, users can determine where they are standing at the hospital. The application provides a map of the hospital campus and a multi-layer diagram of the hospital floors, departments, and rooms. You can even search for a specific location, such as an ultrasound room, and the app will guide you on how to get there.

According to Tran Minh Tan, DefiMaps is more accurate than Google Maps. Because Google Maps positioning error is from 20-30m, but DefiMaps error is only 5-6m. Even if public places have signal boosters installed, DefiMaps' positioning error is only 1-2m.

Mr. Cao Thanh Phu - Dean of Information Technology Faculty of Vien Dong College, instructor for the DefiMaps research team, said: "DefiMaps' positioning is more accurate than Google Maps, not because our technology is better. It's because I identified a smaller group of users than Google Maps. Since then, the research team uses noise reduction algorithms, locating small groups of objects, so the accuracy is higher."

According to Mr. Cao Thanh Phu, the users that DefiMaps target is to find their way around in large public places such as hospitals, amusement parks, and shopping focusing on their walking speed. Meanwhile, Google Maps has to handle the problem for users with diverse speeds, from walking to motorbikes, cars, and buses ... so the positioning error is larger.

Tran Minh Tan shared, I came up with the idea to research this project from my own experience. When taking a family member to a medical examination at a large hospital, he did not know how to proceed, so he had to ask for a "service trigger". The "service stork" only does one thing, which is to lead the patient to the location where they need to do the procedure, and get 200,000 VND from the patient.

When there is DefiMaps, people will not have to lose such irrational money anymore. In particular, DefiMaps also has a more convenient location-sharing feature than the Zalo app. The convenience here is that when going to a crowded place, just sharing the location with each other, DefiMaps users can see each other's location on the map, the application also shows how to meet each other.

Mr. Cao Thanh Phu said that in the near future, DefiMaps would develop more search and voice navigation features like Google Maps. He said: "The user wants to go to the ultrasound room. By giving the command, the application will auto locate the user and the location of the ultrasound room, then instruct the user how many meters to go straight, upstairs or not, turn right or left, how many meters to the ultrasound room...".

More than 2 billion VND was invested in the development of DefiMaps.

DefiMaps is a project participating in a startup competition for students - vocational education students. Therefore, the benefit of the application is only a necessary and sufficient factor for the project to be highly appreciated and win the second prize of Startup Kite in 2022, which is the potential for commercialization.

Therefore, in addition to 4 students of the Faculty of Information Technology, who specialize in engineering and write code for applications, Tran Minh Tan invited Pham Ngoc Thong, a 3rd-year student of the Faculty of Economics, to join the research team.

Pham Ngoc Thong came up with ideas about customers, methods of exploiting benefits from the application from there, building business plans, and profiting from the utility of the application.

DefiMaps is not created for earning money from users. The utility of the application is attracting more users. When the number of users is large enough, DefiMaps will exploit ads from service facilities around public places where the application provides navigation and navigation maps.

For example, at a hospital, DefiMaps will provide advertising services for food services, pharmacies, medical equipment, and so on around the hospital. Advertising participating establishments will be given priority to display on the map, introduce services, and price lists and guide users on the way to the service facility. Users can evaluate service quality, and update actual changes right on applications such as Google Maps.

According to Mr. Cao Thanh Phu, when the number of users is enough, many advertising agencies provide services on DefiMaps, so the application will integrate more e-commerce features for users to order online and delivery facilities to thier users.

Seeing the commercialization potential of DefiMaps, there is now a business investing 2 billion VND and an individual investing 200 million VND to contribute capital to develop applications, bring applications to life, and exploit commercially.

According to Pham Ngoc Thong, when there is an investment, the research team will carry out the steps of copyright registration, feature development, and building a basis for commercialization. First, the project will establish working groups such as a technical team to outsource application features, set up a storage system, build a data platform, promote the application, commercial team.

As for Tran Minh Tan, having the investor will help them focus on researching and developing DefiMaps better, not having to research and write code while working part-time to earn money to study.

Mr. Cao Thanh Phu shared that Vien Dong College is still supporting the research team to develop new features for DefiMaps. Currently, the application is only a test version on mobile phones and online use on the website, not too officially popularized on mobile platforms.

He hopes that, in the closing future, DefiMaps will be officially available on Android and IOS platforms. With the investment of businesses, this project will be commercialized, helping students start a successfully.
